How Early Should You Wake For Suhoor?

Published: Last updated: By the AuraSleep team at Joykek

Short answer: Suhoor ends at imsak; eating and drinking stop when imsak begins.[2] Diyanet does not recommend how many minutes before imsak to wake for suhoor. That is why AuraSleep sets the alarm 50 minutes before imsak by default and lets you change it to 30, 45 or 60 minutes or your own time.

When Does Suhoor End?

The fast begins at imsak. According to the reported Diyanet fatwa, you do not keep eating or drinking after imsak begins; planning to “keep eating during the call to prayer” is not right.[2] So when you set your suhoor alarm, the target is imsak, not the call to prayer. Take the imsak time for your city from the Diyanet calendar or the app.[4]

Delaying Suhoor

In the hadith narrated by Zayd ibn Thabit, he said they had suhoor with the Prophet and then stood for prayer, with time enough to recite fifty verses between suhoor and the call to prayer (Bukhari 1921).[1] Having suhoor close to imsak is therefore considered sunnah. In practice this means planning suhoor near imsak rather than around midnight.

How Many Minutes Are Enough?

The time you need depends on you. Add up these steps to find yours:

  1. Getting out of bed and waking up properly
  2. Preparing or heating the meal
  3. Eating and drinking without rushing
  4. Leaving a margin before imsak
Alarm Suits
Imsak − 30 min People whose meal is ready and who get going quickly
Imsak − 45 min People who need a little preparation
Imsak − 50 min AuraSleep’s default, for preparation and a calm meal
Imsak − 60 min People who cook or prepare for a large table

For example, on a night when imsak is at 06:20, a 50-minute margin sets the alarm to 05:30. This time is an example.

When Is Ramadan 1448?

According to the Diyanet calendar, the first day of Ramadan is Monday 8 February 2027; the first suhoor is on the night of 7 to 8 February. Eid al-Fitr is 9-11 March 2027.[3]

The Suhoor Alarm In AuraSleep

  • Three days before Ramadan, AuraSleep asks whether you want to turn on the suhoor alarm.
  • If you do, it rings 50 minutes before imsak every night; you can change this to 30, 45, 50 or 60 minutes or set your own time.
  • You can also turn on an iftar reminder.
  • Times are calculated on your phone with the Diyanet method, offline.

The alarm may not ring if your phone is off, silenced or out of battery. If you do not want to miss suhoor, we recommend setting a backup alarm.
